Even the U.S. work ethic is an example of our waning dominance. Sure, American workers work an average of more than 40 hours per week. But Japanese workers work just about as long, and they take naps. That's right. Toyota actually encourages its employees to take naps at lunchtime because it has seen a distinct increase in productivity after sleep in the afternoon. The U.S. work ethic is based on an old industrial model; put in the hours and call it a day. The Japanese models are more innovative.
