Big Circle Boys (Dai Huen Jai)

The Big Circle Boys or Dai Huen Jai has its origins in the Red Guards, the paramilitary troops of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, who terrorized intellectuals and the bourgeois element of society. After Mao Zedong’s death in 1976 many Red Guards were sent to jail in camps near the city of Canton - represented on maps by a big circle - where they were tortured and starved. As the Dai Huen Jai have the reputation of having been through this degradation and have had military training, they have a fearsome reputation in some parts of the Asian community.

A number of these individuals fled to Hong Kong and falsified documents to come to Canada. They first surfaced in Vancouver in 1987.

There is a marked difference between Big Circle Boys (BCB’s) and other local Asian gangs. BCB’s are totally profit oriented/motivated career criminals. Detection is far more difficult because they are extremely mobile and work on the cell principal, recruiting expertise when required for a particular project. They avoid the inter-gang confrontations common to other local Asian gangs.

As they are so mobile and loosely organized it is impossible to quantify BCB numbers. The crimes they have committed or are suspected of committing strongly suggest detailed planning. They are considered to be ruthless and far more sophisticated and innovative than other local Asian gangs. They usually operate in cities with larger Chinese populations where there is needed concealment from law enforcement and a large number of potential victims.

BCB crimes include commercial break-ins, frauds (cheque/credit cards), armed robberies, murders, drug importation (Heroin) and drug exportation(Marijuana).
