In 1901 Columbia University created the Dean Lung Professorship for Chinese in commemoration of a Chinese servant Lung Ti-en (Dean Lung) whose patienece and loyal service had won his employer Carpentier's high praise. His master, a graduate of Columbia University, amassed a forune in the Gold Ruch. In recognition of his servant's vervices, he donated a sizeable amount of money, which was later supplemented by Lung Ti-en's own cash gift for the promotion of Chinese studies.

在一份名为Memoirs of H. A. Giles的资料上，Dean Lung后面所附的汉字清清楚楚地写着“天龙”，这就推翻了 Dean Lung是姓＋名的说法，而是一个常见的中国人的双名。米亚据此大胆推测，1905年的高尔威统计报告中Dean Ding的Ding应该是Dean Lung的姓氏，Dean Lung的中文名字很可能就是“丁天龙”。
