Five dead in Urumqi protests

URUMQI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Five people have been confirmed dead and 14 others were injured and hospitalized in the massive protests Thursday against syringe attacks in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the city's executive deputy mayor Zhang Hong said Friday.
Among the five dead, two had been confirmed as innocent civilians, while police are trying to identify the rest, Zhang said.
Zhang said investigation had showed that the syringe attackers were of Uygur ethnic group while those who were attacked included people of Han and other ethnic groups. He also said no one died Friday.
