8月20日以来，陆续有部分乌鲁木齐市民在公共场所被针状物刺伤，引发了群众的恐慌和不满。

9月2日，由于少数地方又发生“针扎事件”，致使受害人及部分汉族群众对实施针扎行为的犯罪嫌疑人进行围殴，造成一人重伤。

9月3日至目前，因再次发生数起“针扎事件”，导致群众聚集游行，部分地段发生小规模冲突。

另据统计，9月3日，在事件中造成受伤住院治疗14人，死亡5人（其中无辜群众2人）。
