It is true that Americans throw away too many stuff even when they are still good and useful. That's common in rich states/counties in the US. Maybe less common in those poor downtown districts or declining cities, such as Detroit.
In 2000s, the housing boom in States results in more people replacing their old, smaller houses with larger, and more luxurious houses. Therefore, it is not uncommon that you will see many good furniture/TV threw away for free pickups.
If they leave them for trash collection firms, those private firms will charge more fees for "irregular" large items.
