San Diego, CA, United States (AHN) - Thousands of passengers on a damaged Carnival cruise ship being towed to Mexico have received supplies from a Navy aircraft carrier, including the military staple Spam.

The Navy began delivering 35 pallets of supplies Tuesday to passengers from the USS Ronald Reagan, which suspended its training missions to escort the cruise ship towards shore. Tug boats are pulling the disabled vessel toward Ensenada, about 70 miles south of San Diego.

The Coast Guard had said the 952-foot ship would likely reach its destination late Wednesday, but Carnival Cruise Lines said in its latest update arrival is expected midday Thursday. After coming ashore in Mexico, the 3,299 passengers would still have to travel by land to Long Beach, CA.

A fire ignited in the engine room of the ship on Monday without injuring guests or any of the more than 1,000 crew members. Since then, the vessel has been using auxiliary generators and services such as air conditioning, working toilets and telephones remain unavailable or limited. Cold running water was restored the night after the blaze.

The ship, the Carnival Splendor, was on a seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise when it was stranded 200 miles south of San Diego.

Florida-based Carnival Cruise Lines has apologized to guests for the "unfortunate situation." It will be giving a full refund and reimbursing passengers for transportation costs. The company will also give out complimentary cruise trips.
