Oliver Williamson won the Nobel Peace Prize for Economics in 2009 for his work in the 1970s describing the conditions that must be present for a company to efficiently outsource work. In short there must either be multiple potential suppliers for the outsourced work or it must be possible to write a simple contract around that work. If a company proceeds with outsourcing for which neither of these two conditions are true then Williamson's work predicts that ultimately much of the work will be brought back in house, often by acquisition.

The Boeing 787 program is a perfect case study for Williamson's work. There clearly are no alternative suppliers for major airframe components like fuselage sections and by outsourcing the design there was no way to write a simple contract either. The end result is what you have excellently documented above.

What kills me is that Williamson did his work in the 1970s yet these supposed top notch business leaders knew nothing of it and I suspect if you ask them today many of them still know nothing of it.
