There have also been persistent rumors of other Chinese fighter concepts, still on the drawing boards: aircraft reportedly intended to bridge the remaining gap between China and the most advanced of American jet fighters. Rumors of a theoretical, low-observable or 'stealth' fighters abound, reportedly based on an evolved, twin-engined version of the J-10. These concepts, however, remain little more than paper 'wish lists' circulated in the realm of fantasy. For a nation that is still dependent on Russian technology to supply engines and electronics for its most basic of fighter needs, the possibility of developing a stealth aircraft in the class of the F-22, or even the F-117, is remote. Even the Soviet Union, at its height, struggled to keep pace with American technical achievements in this arena. Even the Europeans, who have a broader technology base from which to launch their efforts, have lacked the financial wherewithal to develop a true 'stealth' fighter in the same class as the F-22 or F-35.
