New York - The publisher of Penthouse magazine has filed for chapter 11 protection from its creditors as it seeks to restructure itself and renegotiate its debts.

General Media made the filing on Tuesday in the bankruptcy court in New York. The company will continue to publish Penthouse and related magazines while it works on a reorganisation plan.

Robert Feinstein, General Media's lawyer, said yesterday the company hoped to find additional ways to make more money from the Penthouse name, such as licensing it for adult videos, gentlemen's clubs and online sites.

Feinstein said the company would continue publishing Penthouse on a monthly basis, and no major changes were planned at the magazine. He said he was not aware of any plans for lay-offs or other cost cutting measures such as closing down publications.  


Penthouse was always considered more raunchy than its primary rival, Playboy, but in recent years it had alienated advertisers by publishing explicit, hard-core pornography, analysts said. Penthouse had suffered in recent years as pornography became more easily available on the internet.

Penthouse's circulation has plummeted from nearly 1 million in 1998 to 565 700 last year, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
