The Foreign and Commonwealth Office was facing increasing questions last night over delays in its intervention in the death of a British businessman in China. It has emerged that a British diplomat and two Chinese policemen attended Neil Heywood’s cremation in the Chinese city of Chongqing shortly after he died. However, the British Government did not raise questions with its Chinese counterparts about the suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Heywood’s death until three months later. The failure to act came despite locally based British businessmen urging the Foreign Office to intervene and demand an inquiry into the death of the 41-year-old Englishman and the hasty disposal of his body.
