LONDON, April 22: The British warships London and Black Swan were fired on by Nationalist batteries on the south side of the Yanqtze as well as by Communists from the north side.

This was revealed by a high British official source in Shanghai, who said that the Nationalist attack on the 10,000-ton cruiser London and the sloop Black Swan was responsible for some of the damage and casualties suffered by those ships. He said that the attack occurred when the ships were returning down the Yangtze to Shanghai on Wednesday night after abandoning their attempt to rescue the sloop Amethyst following heavy Communist fire from the north bank. The official declined to give further details but said he be lieved that there was no policy involved and the Nationalist attack was probably made by excited units which for weeks had been manning the banks of the Yangtze waiting tensely for the expected Communist attack. "Some of the Nationalist units probably got trigger happy and were prepared to shoot at anything in the river," he said.

英舰在夜里确实挨了一顿南岸炮弹。不过英舰受到的主要损失来自上午北岸兔子的炮轰，南岸的炮弹迟了十几个小时，所谓“大江南北中国军队炮火夹击”严格来说并没有发生。
