The Terror of Death

John Keats(1795–1821)

WHEN I have fears that I may cease to be

Before my pen has glean’d my teeming brain,

Before high-piled books, in charact’ry

Hold like rich garners the full-ripen’d grain;

When I behold, upon the night’s starr’d face,

Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,

And think that I may never live to trace

Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;

And when I feel, fair creature of an hour!

That I shall never look upon thee more,

Never have relish in the fairy power

Of unreflecting love—then on the shore

Of the wide world I stand alone, and think

Till Love and Fame to nothingness do sink.

当死亡的恐惧袭来，而我

尚未拾尽我心中丰硕的谷穗，

尚未把我的著作象高高的谷堆

那样高高摞起的时候；

当夜空群星璀璨，而我

眼见诸多神奇的意象云涌风起，

想到我再也不能用天赐之笔

将它们的形影一一描摹的时候，

当我想像着再也见不到你，

再也不能领略你我无忧无虑

身处仙境一般热恋的时候，

我刹那芳华的倩女——那时侯，

我将茕茕孑立而念天地之悠悠，

直到爱与名一一化为乌有。

陈子昂因有大孤独，而有大唏嘘，“念天地之悠悠，独怆然而涕下”，原来这么大的唏嘘，尽管并不完全相同，也曾经激荡过济慈年轻的心胸－“on the shore of the wide world I stand alone, and think”。

相比较而言，济慈的话来由说得很具体，而陈子昂的话则更加形而上，更加博大。了了数语，震荡着宇宙，久久不息。

总的来讲，济慈的这首诗也很深沉，可以和陈子昂的诗对照阅读。

陈子昂

前不见古人,后不见来者。

念天地之悠悠,独怆然而涕下。

西方比较深沉的诗似乎很多都和死亡有关，而中国诗人则很少去思考死亡，“未知生，焉知死”，这大概是中国文人的普遍心理。中国诗人深沉的慨叹似乎比较多的以“登临”和“怀古”的面目出现，慨叹的对象是历史，是命运！
