Just as in 1885, not one member of the Chinese community or its descendant was invited in the “last spike” ceremony. Yet, another missed opportunity to present an accurate and complete picture of history … the contribution of thousands of Chinese railroad workers.

Here are the large permanent outdoor art monuments for the building of the Canadian national railway by the Chinese-Canadian men, many who lost their lives or endured great hardship (they were paid less than the others): in Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary.

I can only surmise that Chinese-Canadians were not in the ceremonies/acknowledged because the local social circles tend to stay tight…and just don’t think of their Canadian colleagues…with Chinese faces. Hard reality. Pure and simple. It’s sad. But let’s move on and go visit these other cities where they have the memorial art work. Some of it is quite interesting as a piece of Canadian history.
