From 1992/12/31 to 2011/12/02, SPX rose from 435.71 to 1244.28, +185.57%; INDU rose from 3301.11 to 12019.42, +264.10%; NKY dropped from 16924.95 to 8643.75, -48.93%. If dividends are included, percentage changes are 313.14%, 463.05%, and -38.68%, respectively. S&P 500 and Dow Jones 30 tell very similar stories. Difference in methodology of index calculation is not the primary factor. In addition, from 1990 to 2000, performance of S&P and Dow Jones were very similar, rising by 289% and 295%, respectively.
