1。cronulla riots,Hmmm... ten years of wedge politics and racist speeches from the Prime Minister - are we supposed to be surprised at the outcome? Well - at least he never made any off-the-record joke about a former opponent's wife, so I guess it's ok.
2。Seriously, who didn't see this coming? Now, the question is how deep this will extend. I certainly do not wish to see another France-like riot taking place.
3.Last night when media was asking Mr Howard to condemn rioters waving Oz flag
he refused to do so. From the footage, it appeared to me that rioters were on war path with Oz flag in one hand and bricks/bottles/batons in the other -against citizens of this same country.Quite clearly the thugs from ethnic groups (or any others) should be dealt with full force of law.
4.True, violence was condemned. IMHO, use of national flag in this manner was disgraceful.
This violence has turned into a racial violence.
It is well known to Sydney siders that these gangs war against each other and for some reason it didn't create so much of fear in my mind. However, I am afraid that Cronulla incidence has crossed these gang lines and has taken a racial direction. Not sure whether anyone with dark hair/skin would have been spared by these hooligans irrespective of whether they belong to a gang or were normal citizens enjoying Sydney beaches.
5.Yep it certainly sucks. Very depressing that we're now like every other country that has had large volumes of migration from a diversity of cultures, when up until now we'd largely avoided race riots.
However the diversity is probably the thing I like most about Sydney. Nobody is going to come along and drive a wedge between me and my friends because of our differences when we have so much more than such trivialities in common.
If pushed to choose a side, I'll be going with the side that judges people according to the content of their character and _nothing_ else. I'm betting
that the number of people living in Sydney who choose a different side to that would be so small as to be a statistical anomaly if they were counted. But yeah, it would be so much nicer if we all could discount them totally.
Whatever problems we face as people we need to solve them for ourselves, no party politics will solve them. Indeed no politician I'm aware of is anything like capable enough to begin to even address them. Its up to me and everyone else I meet who also thinks its up to them.If your mind is boggling as to why it finally came to this and you need to find out as an intellectual exercise, don't overlook sitting down in front of tabloid television and listening to talkback radio.Talkback radio? Wrong demographic surely?
Not anymore. 2MMM in the late evenings. Although now I'm sure the announcer is backtracking like nobody's business. I wonder if they even made money out of creating and airing that show...
